I have in my possession an original watercolour of Gaddesby Hall painted by Alick Riley circa 1940. Note the third storey which was removed post WWII.![]()
Although born in London, the Riley family of artists (father Jack and sons Harry and Alick) were descended from Rileys in Barsby and Ashby Folville and were regular visitors to 'The Bushes' at Gaddesby, then the home of my great-aunt Nellie 'Dot' (née Smith) and her husband, Arthur 'Hop' Baker.![]()
Harry Riley was a well known commercial artist and cartoonist (for the Daily Sketch) who also presented and guested on BBC TV programs during the mid-20th century, but probably best recognised for his 'British Railways' posters used to advertise holiday destinations. Harry also painted a number of scenes of Gaddesby including Mill Farm, the brook and local farms. Unfortunately these were recently sold to private buyers, but I do have images of them.![]()
Alick evacuated his two children to 'The Bushes' in 1940, where they lived for eighteen months, his son attending the local school.
1911/12 Membership Card for "Gaddesby and District Football Club" showing full fixture list and results of matches up to December 1911.
Annual membership fee was two shillings and the club seems to have faired reasonably well thus far with eight wins, five losses and two draws.
Assumed to have belonged to Thomas Jones, who was a 28 year-old servant working for Baron de Forest at Gaddesby Hall.
The next meeting of Gaddesby Parish Council will be held on Monday, 8th June 2020 commencing at 6.45pm.
The meeting will take place virtually via Zoom.
